Kate.My mind slowly awakens with sounds of footsteps out in the lot. Right, left, right. Stiff as a soldier, an ever beating rhythm. They seem to scream, Look outside, something interesting is happening! I follow their calls to the window. I look down. There, a little girl plants beans. Who would want to be down there? It smells of garbage, and rotting food, but this girl looks like she is on an important mission. She looks sad, forlorn. I contemplate this. Why, at this hour, is a sad little girl planting beans? Only she knows. She pats the dirt down, and waters the beans from a thermos. I go back to bed and dream of gardens and ripe bean pods. AnKate.

Vamos.“Vamos, chica. We’re almost there.” Juana creeps along behind me. We’re ten feet from the border. Ten feet from freedom, a new life, a new chapter. The guards lurk ominously. Of course, we come to a spot with a five-foot-high fence and guards. I hear a crack. Juana breaks a stick. Instinctively, the guards look towards the sea. “For a fire? I’m cold.”, she asks hopefully.Vamos.
She doesn’t seem to know that we’re risking our lives, and we can't be seen. “Fire? Dios mio.” I screech silently. I look back to the guards. They don’t see us.
